Questions that lead back to everyday life.

Jack Hopkins has a background in journalism and public service. He grew up in the suburbia of Ottawa, Canada, never fitting easily into any class or group he was part of.

He has a habit of asking a simple question and accidentally starting a chapter. In this case, it led to his first book, The Infinite Garden Cycle.

Particularly in his public sector career, he has encountered people from all walks of life who have a dire need for repair. The difference between those who receive it and those who don't is something that stays with him, and is part of what powered his thinking as he started this book.

Along with family experiences of suicide, he has dealt with the fallout from unhealed pain. His understanding of pain, and of finding hope and clarity through philosophy comes from visceral experience, not from his master's or his undergraduate education.

The Infinite Garden Cycle is forthcoming from Essentia Books, an imprint of Collective Ink, in 2027.

From the author’s note

Why I kept writing.

“I didn’t find this book on a mountaintop. I found most of it at my desk, usually while doubting the last paragraph I’d just written.

I started writing because the world feels increasingly splintered, and I was looking for a more coherent way to think about connection and repair in my life. When I began writing, I wasn’t sure how much to believe in it, and I'm still not sure now. In any case, it’s helped me repair a friendship, so I no longer doubt its usefulness.”
